AFAIK all major religions have their 'holy' books and all of them consider those books to be free from error. Fundamentalists of all stripes consider *every* single word in their holy books to be absolutely, incontrovertibly true - in the case of fundamentalist Christians (and presumably others) despite a considerable body of evidence to the contrary. I've only scanned parts of the Koran and can't really comment on it. WRT the Bible at one time or another I've read most of it at least once. There are *lots* of things mentioned in the Bible that (a) are no longer relevant, (b) never occurred, (c) are not supported by any other source and (d) are flat-out wrong. Some things described in the Bible have archaelogical evidence of that occurrence - Noah's flood is one such - or existence - the Walls of Jericho being one example. The bottom line is that AFAIC, *some* Biblical events are true but the Bible itself is not inerrant because some other things in the Bible are not true. Note that there is also archaeological evidence of occurrences mentioned in ancient writings other than the Bible - the city of Troy, from Homer's Iliad, comes to mind. But then AFAIK neither the Iliad nor the Odyssey are considered 'holy' books. --- FleetStreet 1.19+* Origin: Bob's Boneyard, Emerson, Iowa (1:300/3) SEEN-BY: 10/1 3 14/250 34/999 120/228 123/500 128/2 140/1 222/2 226/0 249/303 SEEN-BY: 250/306 261/20 38 100 1381 1404 1406 1418 266/1413 280/1027 320/119 SEEN-BY: 396/45 633/260 267 690/734 712/848 800/432 801/161 189 2222/700 SEEN-BY: 2320/100 105 2905/0 @PATH: 300/3 14/5 140/1 261/38 633/260 267 |
