AAC for the same bitrate is a better encoder than WM9 has been, for sure.
The latest WM encoder though is getting closer to what AAC can do. AAC,
also knows as MP4, was really worked on by some engineers at Bell Labs, one
of whom frequents a pro audio mail list, for heavy duty designers.
Interesting fellow, has done many papers on how the ear work, how we hear,
what masking effects work well, and ones that don't.
AAC is also a format that I believe that REAL sells their downloads in as
well, which is why they're able to convert them to play on an iPod,
although they tend to stay in a one-upmanship battle with Apple on that
issue.
