  I have had an L7 since 1979 when I picked it up new, I also own an L4B. I 
agree with Evan
I as a matter of fact what I do is load the amp to the 500 watt position 
output , in the tune position, I have never run in the SSB position. I would 
say I use about 40 to 50 watts of drive , and this equates ruffly to 
1000Wpep input , plenty of power for all purposes. The tubes in the L7 are 
original .
