thanks for the follow-up  The big shop here in town told me to call
them in about 3 weeks as they will be going on a buying spree and
should have some in stock--used that is---  I am convinced that I can
only go to about 50 horse but I'm leaning toward the mercs and now that
I have some refrence I will try to look for a little newer version than
I originally thought I could afford.     thanks again
My boat is an old 14' fiberglass runabout  --- a 50 horse should push
that around fairly well don't you think?  It's a v hull design but the
bow is fairly steep, so it really pushes the water until it planes out.
Any ideas on converting the transom to long shaft??  I think that will
be about the only motor style I will be able to find ( if my initial
research is correct)  Any of the guys that I talked to said the short
shaft mercs were quite rare. (Around here anyway)
