I've always found it somewhat ironic that Fidonet was started by a gay,
anarchist punk-rocker who published a homo-core 'zine and just happened to be
into technology, but it was usurped by those who feel this compulsive need to
regulate the morality and language of others.

I remember in the late '90s when BBSes began to carry USENET news feeds
fairly regularly; the apoplexy of BBS sysops who didn't understand the medium
and tried to control it was strange and vaguely amusing before it got
annoying and people started dropping those posts from things that looked like
BBSes into the bitbucket.
