Roger,

The White Pass and Yukon Route was built in 1899 to connect Whitehorse and
Skagway and was an integral part of Yukon history until it stopped running
to Whitehorse in 1982. Until then the railway carried freight and
passengers on a regular schedule but the shutdown of the Cypress Anvil mine
in Faro in 1981 marked the end of the freight traffic. The train shut down
completely and then re-opened as a tourism vehicle taking cruise ship
passengers to Bennett, B. C. or to the White Pass Summit. It no longer
runs in the winter.

Even now, the trip on this narrow gauge train is stunning. My wife and I
have taken it from Skagway to the Summit several times and it's a great
run.

Take care,
