Berger named director of BMW Motorsport

MUNICH, Germany (Jul 6, 1998 - 13:21 EDT) - Austrian former Grand Prix ace
Gerhard Berger has been named director of BMW Motorsport and tasked with
preparing the company's return to Formual One racing.

Berger, who won 10 Grand Prix in a 210-race career that spanned stints with
Benetton, McLaren and Ferrari, was chosen for "his experience and
ability," the Bavarian firm said in a statement.

His main task will be to set up a proposed partnership with the Williams
team, set to take off in the year 2000.

A BMW engine, used by the Brabham team, powered Brasilian Nelson Piquet to
the Formula One championship in 1983.
