Hi Bill,
Sorry you were turned off by the semi-pro alternatives out there, I am too.
When you are getting into digital, you can get random access digital audio
workstations for a low price, depending on how much space you need.
I would consider an ADAT or a DA-88 only to be compatible with the semi-pro
market, but would not use these machines in a real studio situation. The ADAT
is getting acceptance as a backup device for workstations, and is the
predominant digital tape format other than the two track DAT and the
multitrack DASH formats on reel to reel. The limitations of the semi-pro
analog gear in headroom, dynamic range and noise floor at least can be gotten
around using an ADAT. The Roland DM800 seems to be a good dedicated
workstation, I prefer the kinds that plug into a PC and do the job, using
Spectral personally. There are some smaller format digital recording systems
out there that are fairly cheap and very flexible that you could also
consider.
Best of luck in any case!
