None of that sounds familiar here.  I've been using them for years and they 
work great.  I routinely connect long distance with a USR v.e and get 26k4 or 
better.  I also connct with Madrid and Sydney on occaision, and the transfers 
go great.
Maybe you got a dud, maybe you had phone line problems, maybe you just didn't 
have it set up right.  Don't bash the entire product line because you 
couldn't manage to get yours to work.
