I don't _think_ you misunderstood me, but....
If you can be more productive and reach more clients by purchasing an outside 
product or service, wouldn't it pay for itself several times over?
When I taught at University, I used to tell my students, "If you think 
education is expensive, try ignorance!"  And to my children I conveyed, 
"Investment always _precedes_ dividends."
It gets down to precious time and money.  Sure, if you have nothing but time, 
go for it.  But the more your time is worth, the more ways you find to save 
it,right?  And additional tools help you with that.  Oh yes, you could walk 
to Acapulco saving the plane fare, but would you really?
You are modifying a program for personal use?  Disregard my comments above.
You are doing it for a client?  Look for ways to save BOTH of you time and 
money.  'Nuff said.
