I once kept a 10 gal with air-stone powered lift tubes for the undergravel 
filter. There was a number of Kuhli loaches which would quite happily swim 
under the gravel bed. They survived there - often for weeks on end -  which I 
thought wierd, because of the lack of obvious nutrition.
