Drivers have new agreement (27-Jul-98) - Formula One's drivers have agreed a new 'code of conduct' in a bid to rid the sport of the kind of dangerous overtaking moves and hard-handed tactics which have already blighted this season. In the aftermath of a series of incidents, most notably in Canada when Michael Schumacher accused Damon Hill of trying to kill him by weaving as they battled for third place, drivers are now only allowed to change their racing line once to defend their position. David Coulthard, who has called for a drivers' code of conduct ever since he was turfed out of the lead in the Argentine Grand Prix by Michael Schumacher, believed that the new agreement between the members of the GPDA led to a much cleaner race in Austria. "You're allowed to move over just once and change your line," he said. "It was just a situation of clarifying the situation after what had happened in Canada with Michael Schumacher, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Damon Hill." Ralf Schumacher, who had one of the most frenetic fights of the race with his brother Michael, added: "It is important that we fight with each other properly and not start zig-zagging all over the place. We don't want anything that is dangerous, like we had with Damon and Michael in Canada which could have been very bad." Damon Hill resigned from his post as spokesman of the GPDA over the Austrian Grand Prix weekend and was replaced by Alexander Wurz. It is not thought the controversy of this year had any part to play in his decision. --- Msged/386 4.20 beta 4* Origin: Blizzard of Ozz, Melbourne, Australia (3:635/728.4{at}fidonet) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 633/267 |
