 The water in this area is incredibly hard.  It cakes the inside of hot
 water tanks, and it roughens the surface of valves and rubber washers
 to a point where the valves won't fully close.
 The new addition of lake water to the traditional well water in our city
 water supply has greatly increased the treatment chemicals present in
 our water further complicating its use in aquariums.
 People here pay considerable sums of money if they choose to soften their
 water, but the reduced number of hot water tanks and volume of detergent
 serves to counterbalance the cost.
