Have you had any trouble with cloudiness in the water?  If so, it may be 
possible that the barb got stuck in the rocks (or some other fixture) and 
decomposed.  Another possibilty is that he jumoed out of the tank.  Have you 
checked the area around the outside of the tank?
With all that ruled out, the only other possibility is alien abduction!
