RL>I was at an airfield that had a "hasty" runway on one side that the Army
RL>and similar folks used and a concrete side the Air Force and Navy used.
RL>One day I walked over to the other side to take movies with my brand new
RL>Super 8 camera. Some Air Force pilot was getting an in-country
RL>transition to C-47s (at least I hope he wasn't a certified pilot). At
RL>any rate, I have a few movies of landings where the last part is a shot
RL>of my feet and the sand as I ran to get behind something. I never
RL>before or since have seen anything so big so out of control. Very
RL>impressive.
Jim Cole said he found the Gooney very docile..... We were taking a
load of F-89 pilots to Mitchel when Jack ------ almost put us upside
down. After we landed, Phil Rand, the 61st Fighter commander, said
real LOUD, "Sanders, I thought navigators could land better than that."
That was coming to tropics after Newfoundland. I had three years of
excellent flying and administrative experience there. BUT did not
want to repeat it. I went back to crew duty and stayed until I qit.
