Amy,
Give them a go.  I don't know for sure how you will react, however,
unless you keep in mind that the series was written in the 30's, so
these now hackneyed (sp?) plot devices were just being seen for the
first time!  Actually, in some ways, it could be better to follow the
original publication order (Galactic Patrol, Gray Lensmen, 2nd Stage,
Children) and then read triplanetary and First Lensman, as you get the
surprises without the spoilers found in the first book.  Kinda like
seeing In the Beginning first before seeing the rest of B5...

Back in the dark ages (High School) a friend of mine and I had a bet-
which was better, Lensmen or LotR.  My friend won ;-)
