Before you eat that next hamburger, you might want to read a six-part series
that appeared in today's online edition of the New York Times called "Trail
of E. Coli Shows Flaws in Inspection of Ground Beef". It's quite an
eye-opener. It deals with a twenty-two year old woman named Stephanie Smith
-- a children's dance instructor -- who became paralyzed in 2007 after
eating a home-grilled hamburger that was contaminated with a virulent strain
of E. coli bacteria.

According to the article, the bottom line -- as if we should really be
surprised -- is plain old corporate GREED! One paragraph in part one of the
article states:

Using a combination of sources -- a practice followed by most large
producers of fresh and packaged hamburger -- allowed Cargill to spend about
25 percent less than it would have for cuts of whole meat.

Those low-grade ingredients are cut from areas of the cow that are more
likely to have had contact with feces, which carries E. coli, industry
research shows.
