While browsing through the echo at 10:40 on 11 Oct 97 I saw something about
Win95 Networking. by Simon Harmel to All.....
SH> System:
SH> Two Win95 machines networked together with a couple of ethernet PCI
SH> cards using Win95 networking.
Uh-huh! - just what I have...
SH> Problem: When Win95 starts it asks for username and password. The
SH> user (me) is the same each time.
SH> The real problem is, that as a bbs operator, I need to get rid of this
SH> startup question, so when I go on holiday, and I use a timer to
SH> restart the PC at night Win95 doesn't "hang" on this startup question.
Know what you mean, one of mine is in another room and that's a bit
inconvenient at times for much the same reason...
SH> Is there a way to get Win95 to default to a user setting, and stop
SH> asking for a username on startup?
Yep, go into the control panel > networking and set the "Primary Network
Logon" to "Windows Logon" next change your password to nothing, ie: just
hit the enter key and again when it asks for confirmation, restart the
machines and that should be it, works on mine :)
Using this method you can still use passwords to restrict access to other
network drives and resources if needed.
If you have probs with changing the password, just delete the ????????.PWL
file from the windows directory so that next time the system starts it will
create a new password file.
