When the device meets all of the requirements of the FAA for performance
and reliability it gets expensive.  Aircraft electronic gear is not as
much of a ripoff as it may seem.  I worked for a major manufacturer of
avionics for many years and was able to see this first hand.  But I will
admit that a few items are overpriced, usually to extend the margin on
some other products that are underpriced by design.  When your life is
dependent on a pice of electronic gear you usually want the most
reliable that you can get and that was what we tried to build,
regardless of price.
