I tend to agree with him. We use a LOT of nuclear power here in 
Ontario, Canada, and it does seem to get the job done more cleanly than 
most alternatives. There's a coal-fired power station fairly close to 
where I live, and people have pointed out that there would be less 
*radioactivity* released into the environment if it were replaced with 
a nuke on the same site. The ash from burning coal is quite 
significantly radioactive, largely because of the potassium in it. But 
coal ash tends to be treated without any special precautions, and is 
allowed to escape into the environment without much thought. Low-level 
nuclear waste, with the same radioactivity, would be treated much more 
carefully. 
  
Don't you have a lot of waterfalls and things in NZ that could be used 
for hydro-electric power?
