   Yes - it is a new form of rootkit.  I don't think that there is a new
escalation of privilege here - malware still couldn't write to the MBR or
BIOS on Vista limited user account.

  But it does underscore the danger of virus spreading via USB sticks.
Interesting that the only currently known defense is Bitlocker + TPM.
