  I deposit my cheque on campus at the ATM and get a receipt that shows the
amount deposited, time, etc.  I can get either a plain receipt or one with
a picture of the cheque on it.  From the moment its accepted its considered
deposited and available.
  My boss is too cheap to have direct deposit, though people have been
asking for it for years.  One reason being having to physically pick up
your cheque somewhere, if they are upset about something they can chew you
out before they hand you your money.  (With me they have given up chewing
me out, knowing its a waste of both our times.  )
