Hi Marianne,
This will have to be my last message for about a week, not gonna have
my computer for about a week (don't know, sniff, if I can live without
her!), but I'll be right back here once we are reunited.
MR> It's so ridiculous to me that people are so destructive and greedy,
MR> look at the California History for Gold mining, miners did alot of
MR> damage to the hills, caused undue errosion-dynamiting and using
MR> hydraulic mining, People do the same thing with fishing, they over
MR> fish-That's what initially happened in Monterey, CA with the Sardine
MR> canning businesses. Now they have diving, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium
MR> there, They ended up making something good out of something
MR> bad..stinky, old wrotten abandoned warehouses were all that was left
MR> after the canning businesses pulled out of the area. Now, people all
MR> over the world come to see the "Monterey Bay Aquarium" and every spring
MR> there are 100's of dive classes at the Coast Guard Jetty getting their
MR> open water testing completed there.
Maybe, but in the long run (very long run) the "damage" we do to mother
earth is not even a blimp on the geologic time scale. It only hurts us.
Afterall, show me one dinosaur trail, or pre-historic forest fire and
what that did (heck, I'll bet you can't even tell me the life story of
the *greatest dino that ever lived), and they were around 165M years.
It's just sad we don't have greater respect for ourselves than to
(mess) in our own living rooms.
MR>
MR> But still it is really sad to know that Thailand has irreversable
MR> damage to their reefs, that will probably never recover because people
MR> just don't care.
Nope, nothing is irreversible, you just have to wait a long, long, long
time!
MR> So, What is it that you actually do? If you don't mind my asking?
I work for a large computer company. ;)
MR> You are a private pilot, is that just for your use or for others?
Just for me goofing off on weekends.
MR> Then my brother probably won't do it then, Because he is a newlywed,
Oh, I dunno, give him (and her) a year or two and a kid or two...
JG> MR> love to hear more about Thailand or other dive sites including Truk,
JG>I have a friend over there who is always looking for dive masters and/or
JG>instructors. The pay is about 2000 baht per month ($80) and any tips.
MR> But what is the cost of living like there? Is it more of a place you'd
MR> want to visit than live there?
It's nice if you REALLY believe you are not a materialist. No starvation,
housing is not important as it never gets cold, etc. But if you like AC,
electricity, running water and so on, it ain't for you!
MR> I don't have any friends or relatives in other countries, But I was
MR> talking to this girl from the gym I go to and she was telling me that
MR> she is going to go to Europe probably in October and go to-France,
MR> Ireland, and probably England for 3 months and if she finds a place
MR> she likes she'll probably stay there. Sounds like a great opportunity
MR> to me. What do you think?
I've lived in two entirely different cultures and seen people who think
they are going to drop in and become part of the country. So far the
ratio of success to failures are millions to one against. Like my
(Navy nurse) aunt once said after I got back from my first non-visit
living-overseas experience "Living is different than visiting, isn't
it?" We just smiled knowingly at each other. Call me some time when
you have hours and $$$'s and I will tell you what "culture shock" really
is!
MR>
MR> As for where you are sending from: How is North Carolina? Is it
MR> terribly hot?
It's a lot like Houston, TX: hot and humid.
MR> But I too would love to see,
MR> Florida maybe even go to school there to become a diving instructor and
MR> go to school there, I've been playing with that idea for about 6 months
MR> now. What do you think?
Only been to FL once and that was on business. Lots of people go there
to learn diving and become dive/leaders/instructors, so it's probably
like star-wanna-bes and Hollywood.
MR> By the way, what is your E-mail address? I know the message will be
james.gampper@tpr.vnet.net
MR> þ SLMR 2.1a þ History repeats itself because nobody listens.
Huh, what?
See ya in about 8 days!
