Probably any Linux newsreader will do the job. I wouldn't use
Thunderbird though, I suspect it might consume too much processor time.

I, personally, would recommend Gnus. Yes, it's Emacs thing, but it's
probably most technologically advanced newsreader out there, as long as
you're not doing binaries. Gnus is just not designed for them. On
text-only side of the field it can handle pretty much anything you can
think of, and it's exceptionally good if you have to do something
unusual in order to read and post news.

Just google "Gnus big manual" to get the idea of what it can do.
