On stage I've always used a mic AND a direct line from a bass. The mic
gives me the definition, roundness, and just a little bit of distortion,
while I get the bottom from the DI. I prefer something along the lines
of an AKG D-112 for this.
In the studio, I've used a mic ALONE on many a bass amp. Sometimes a
mic on a tube amplifier sounds MUCH better than the direct signal from
the same instrument.
And BTW, most "pre out" jacks on amplifiers are AFTER the eq section of
the amp. How many bass players have made it though the night without
ever changing that eq? As he/she messes with the amp it completely
changes the signal sent to the console, especially level wise.
... Buy a 486-33 you can reboot faster..
