I don't see why, I can stream highdef xvid files to my video server without
sucking up all the bandwidth. It just needs xvid or divx compression done
in the hardware. In a world where a TV is expected to decrypt a full
highdef HDMI stream I don't see why this can't easily be done with a camera
(hardware encoding is the hard part) and just media player classic on the
other end.

I mean it's not like the requirements of a network DVD player are less than this.
