I wouldn't want to be in his shoes these days.

But, first, "Developers". He actually is completely right: MS
have always provided substantial support for developers and that laid the
groundwork for their ability to enforce the DOS/Windows "tax".
You can't build (and then enforce) an oligopoly-tax if the OS doesn't
support the applications you want. Remember that people didn't initially
buy Apples, they bought the Visicalc machine.

And I wouldn't want to be in his shoes because PC/Server OS's are a mature
market. It's very difficult to grow and requires substantial effort just
to maintain. It's also very important that you don't do anything that
represents a paradigm shift because you open the whole thing up again.
Remember when Britain moved from wood ships to metal ships. Suddenly her
overwhelming naval advantage was eliminated because any metal ship was so
superior to a wooden ship that even a small country building a few metal
ships could destroy the navy of a larger country that only had wooden
ships.
