Formula 1: British Grand Prix
------------------------------------------------------------
Wet and Cold
------------
[Sun Jul-12 11h00 CET]
It's a wet day at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix 30 minute Warm-Up
session. Although not actually raining at the start, it has rained three
times in the last hour and the track is definitely wet. The air
temperature is 15 degrees C and the track is 14.
Everyone is out on track as soon as the session opens, wet tyres on and
plumes of spray in the air. Most drivers head back into the pits to swap
cars, especially Rosset as he bounced his off the barriers half way round
the lap. Just Villeneuve stays on track and puts down a 1m 52.665s. His
next lap is faster at the split times, but uncompleted as he returns to the
pits. Seconds later Hill slides a little too far and bangs into the side
of a Stewart. He returns to the pits for a new nose.
10 minutes into the session only three drivers have completed a fast lap:
Alesi (1m 45.480s - 4L), Nakano (1m 51.733s - 4L), Villeneuve (1m 52.665s
- 4L), Tuero (1m 53.875s - 4L).
15 minutes into the session and Verstappen spins off the track, over the
grass and rejoins the session.
During this middle 10 minutes the times dropped rapidly at first and then
levelled out with the formation of a dry line. With 10 minutes of the
session left the top six are: Coulthard (1m 39.807s - 6L), Irvine (1m
40.127s - 8L), M.Schumacher (1m 40.296s - 8L), Hakkinen (1m 40.323s - 8L),
Frentzen (1m 41.620s - 6L), and Fisichella (1m 41.810s - 7L).
In the final few seconds Diniz spun and stalled his Arrows.
Usually at the end of a session there are a few drivers who pass the start
line with just seconds left to put in a final lap. This time EVERYONE was
still on track at the final moment and they all ran as much of the allowed
time as possible.
During the session the drivers covered between 9 (Rosset) and 15 (Nakano)
laps. One second covered the first 2 places and two seconds covered the
first 3.

Schumacher Wins in the Pits!
----------------------------
[Sun Jul-12 17h00 CET]
Michael Schumacher took his 31st career win at today's British Grand Prix
in a most unusual and controversial way - in the pit lane. Finishing
second was the McLaren of championship leader Mika Hakkinen, followed by
the Ferrari of Eddie Irvine. Completing the points' positions were the
Benettons of Wurz and Fisichella, followed by R.Schumacher, earning Jordan
their first championship point of the season.
It had been raining on and off all day, at the start of the race it was
off. The track, though, was very wet and just about every driver was
running on treaded intermediate tyres, all ready for a dry line to form.
Poleman Hakkinen lead into the first corner, followed by M.Schumacher and
Coulthard, who had passed third-on-the-grid Villeneuve. Alesi also passed
Villeneuve into the first corner, jumping from 8th on the grid to 4th.
Irvine made a bad start, dropping from his 5th place on the grid to 10th.
On lap 5 Coulthard dives past Schumacher to move into second place. By
this time Irvine has passed Wurz into 9th and the rain is just starting
again. In the next few laps Irvine passes Herbert and Hill, he comes up
behind Villeneuve, who promptly makes a mistake and runs wide. Irvine
passes the Williams into 6th place. We are now 8 laps into the race.
By lap 10 the top 10 are:
Hakkinen->3.800s->Coulthard->5.300s->M.Schumacher->4.900s->Alesi->6.900s->Frentzen->0.400s->Irvine->3.500s->Villeneuve->0.900s->Hill->1.300s->Herbert->1.400s->Wurz.
On the next lap Irvine passes Frentzen and the rain slows. On lap 14 the
first casualty, British ex-World Champion Damon Hill, spins and stalls.
Two laps later Frentzen follows suit. The rain is coming back.
By lap 25 we have had a round of pits stops during which time Irvine has
squeaked into third. The top ten are:
Hakkinen->2.100s->Coulthard->5.200s->M.Schumacher->24.300s->Irvine->6.600s->Herbert->0.200s->Alesi
->15.600s->R.Schumacher->6.000s->Villeneuve
->6.600s->Wurz->1.400s->Fisichella.
Shortly afterwards, Herbert spins off into the gravel. Marshalls push him
out of a dangerous position and back onto the track. He has to retire in
the pits though, as a push from a Marshall comes complete with
disqualification. Minutes later Salo also spins off into the gravel as do
Tuero and Rosset.
On lap 37, whilst 3.7s behind the leader and 18s in front of M.Schumacher,
Britain's serious hope of a local winner ends as David Coulthard spins off
into the gravel. Minutes later Wurz spins coming into the pits.
By lap 41 the rain is really pouring down, Hakkinen is 42s in front of
M.Schumacher when he also spins off. He takes a very rough trip over the
gravel spinning round and round, over the grass and back onto the track.
He suffers damaged bodywork, but keeps the lead. Drivers not so lucky
include Barrichello, Verstappen, Trulli and Panis, all of whom leave the
track.
The bad visibility and the number of cars off track in dangerous positions
causes the Safety Car to come onto the track. By now only the top 4 of
Hakkinen, M.Schumacher, Irvine and Alesi are on the lead lap.
The Safety Car heads back to the pits at the end of lap 49, whilst the top
10 are: Hakkinen->2.000s->M.Schumacher->1.100s->Irvine
->5.000s->Alesi
->Fisichella->Wurz->R.Schumacher->Villeneuve->Nakano->Takagi.
There were actually 11 cars on track, but Diniz spun off as soon as he
accelerated after the pace car left. M.Schumacher was now right on
Hakkinen's tail and on the next lap the Finn slides off letting the Ferrari
past. Once again Hakkinen rejoins, although now in second place.
By lap 52 the rain has stopped, the sun is out and the track is like a
swimming pool. Villeneuve spins off over the gravel, then the grass and
rejoins without loss of his 8th position. At the end of lap 54 Alesi heads
for the pits and retires.
On lap 57 a 10s penalty is issued against leader M.Schumacher for an
illegal move during the Safety Car laps. He is only 18.7s in front of
Hakkinen, so a conventional in-stop-out penalty would lose him the race.
Ferrari have a 3 lap window in which they must make the stop, so they
decide to bring him in at the end of the last lap. Schumacher stops and
restarts, he wins by passing the finish line point in the pit lane before
Hakkinen passes it on the track.
In the interview afterwards, M.Schumacher said he had had an easy race up
to the pace car, his only problem was that he was not fast enough. When
the pace car went in he just took his opportunities. He still did not know
the reason for his 10s penalty, but guessed it was something to do with
Fisichella and the pace car. When asked about the decision to come in on
the last lap, he said that he did not really know what was happening. His
radio had been operating badly for about half the race and he had been
passing messages to the pits via Irvine. After the pace car had gone in,
he felt he stood a good chance of passing Hakkinen. At that moment he was
on full wet tyres and felt he knew the water (and possible passing places)
around the track very well. In the end that was not an issue as Hakkinen
ran wide.
Mika Hakkinen said he was very upset about losing the race as he had been
doing so well. He said that after his first spin the damaged body work
caused some problems on the corners, so he could not go as fast as before.
Even when the Safety car went in and he had Schumacher on his tail he still
felt very confident. As he started to push the car to pull out a lead, the
aerodynamics gave up and he suddenly found himself going straight onto the
grass.
Eddie Irvine said that he had made a bad start and spent the first part of
the race passing people. He also made the point that he had trouble
passing Hill as he weaves around and blocks a lot. Near the end, when he
was chasing Hakkinen, he felt that it would have been very hard to overtake
so he just tried to look after his car and finish the race.
This is Schumacher's third win in a row and his fourth of the year. It's
Irvine's 5th podium finish in a row and his 5th third place this season.
Schumacher is now just 2 points behind Hakkinen in the championship.
