Of course they can. With a bit of luck it should even be possible on a
per-call basis.
These days there is no special hardware to detect the pulses. There is just
one piece of hardware that detects loop current. presence or absence of
loop current is made into a binary input into a processor. The timing
determines if it is a permanent on hok condition (t>400ms), a flash
pulse (100 ms * Origin: Thou shalt not go faster than light. (2:280/5555)
