The card (netcard) probaly helped a lot, what does help is using vesa or pci 
devices, on my old server, 486dx4-100 with 32mb of ram, using the adaptec 
scsi (vesa, 2842) the utilization for the disk channel was about 2%, and with 
an isa netcard just the netcard alone was taking about 50% +, so i got a 3com 
590 pci card and with the two the utilization never went about 35% at least i 
never see it go that high.  Also make sure you can put as much memory as you 
can on it, too much its never too much ;)
