It has been repeatedly. From Betamax on Sony keeps making it's own storage
media etc & then usually the only people they can get to support the
"Sony format" complete with royalties to Sony are music &
film comps with "Sony" in their name.

Not if the DVD kept "breaking" as Sony film kept changing the
