subject: BAUD RATES

LR> I just installed a new 33,600 modem on my daughters

LR> my BBS and several other in the area. If I set the baud
LR> rate for the call at 38600, my bbs (FrontDoor &
LR> Maximus) reads the call at 300 baud!! When I change it
LR> down to 19200 baud everything works fine.
i think this is more of a front-door problem.. fd systems are usually setup
to exit on whatever errorlevel is the speed of the call divided by 100 or
whatever (so you connect at 14400, it exits at errorlevel 144.. if you call
at 28800, it exits at errorlevel 288 (which doesn't exist) and wraps around
to 288-255 = 32. Since you don't have "if errorlevel 32 then.." it goes down
to the next one.. which just happens to be 300 =) (actually it should
probably be 2400..?) anyways. this is offtopic eitherway :)
i use binkley and maximus here, and just have binkley write a batch file
which goes directly to maximus, and just reports the exact speed in the -b
parameter.
 LR> When I call other BBS's I get 28,800 connection at a
 LR> setting of 38600 baud.
another sysop told me that running his bbs at 115200 seemed to speed it up..
i used to run mine at 38400 as well, but then switched to 115200, i haven't
noticed any difference at all, but who knows :)
that speed, btw, is basically the speed your computer talks to the modem, not
modem-to-modem.. dunno if you knew that or not, but i've had a couple of my
users complain about long download times, even though they've set their 14400
modems to connect at 57600 =)
