Villeneuve continues GPDA snub

(12-Jul-98) - Jacques Villeneuve has reaffirmed his lack of interest in the
Grand Prix Drivers' Association, the regular meeting that helps drivers
speak as one voice over issues of safety.

The furore kicked up after Canada where Michael Schumacher, one of the
GPDA's spokesmen, was embroiled in several dangerous racing manouevres.

"I wouldn't want to be part of a group where it's just a few people
bitching at each other and accomplishing nothing," pointed out
Villeneuve. "The drivers don't stick together so it's a waste of
time."

But David Coulthard, a leading light in the GPDA, has his own views.

"Jacques came to one meeting when he was having a difficult
time," he said. "The rest of the time he's quite happy just to be
controversial and do all the things that make people think he's a
character. Ultimately I think that if you do things behind closed doors is
can make all the difference. All that trying to use the public doesn't
help."
