Drake enthusiasts,

From my experience, with three L7s that I own and about 8 L4Bs that I've
owned, I have had "different" experiences. Given that the tubes
are good, and the power supply capacitors are known to be good, I can get
1500 watts PEP out on 40 and 80 meters, the only bands I operate. I
generally run only 900 watts PEP to save the tubes, since the extra 1.5 db
wouldn't be noticed on the air anyway. To obtain that output, I drive it
with only 60 watts PEP. If one sets the driver up for 100 watts output, my
amps would be over-driven with well in excess of 200 ma of grid current,
the recommended maximum (except for Amperex tubes). Hence, it is a good
idea to tune the amp and driver accordingly, and use the ALC if it is
compatible with the driver. Note that the ALC setting will vary from band
to band.

Just one ham's experiences. Enjoy those Drakes.

73s,

Evan
