Williams thanks Villeneuve

(24-Jul-98) - Frank Williams, boss of the Williams Grand Prix team, refused
to comment on Thursday about the departure of reigning world champion
Jacques Villeneuve to British American Racing -- but did issue a statement
thanking the Canadian for his contributions.

Williams, who had hoped to keep Villeneuve on for a third season at his
team, was clearly disappointed that the talented driver had taken the
gamble of deciding to switch to BAR.

"Following the announcement today, we confirm that Jacques Villeneuve
will not be driving for the Winfield Williams team in 1999," read the
Williams statement.

"Jacques' current contract expires at the end of this year and he will
therefore continue to drive for the Winfield Williams team through to the
end of this contract."

"We would like to take this opportunity of thanking Jacques for his
contribution to both the 1996 and 1997 FIA Formula One world Constructors'
Championships and to congratulate him on his own 1997 FIA Formula One World
Drivers' title."

"It has been and will continue to be until the end of this year, a
great pleasure to work with Jacques. We all wish Jacques every success in
his new appointment."

"Williams Grand Prix Engineering will not be announcing its 1999
driver line-up until early September. No further comment will be made by
the team at this stage."
