It is slightly more expensive than the Washington, DC area. Of course, we
were on Maui, and I assume that Oahu is a lot more expensive. Other things
to endear Maui to you include the many endangered "native" bird species. I
say "native" because the ecohistory of the islands is really a series of
invasions, from birds being blown off-course, etc. Like Ireland, there are
no snakes. Because the islands were so isolated, things that evolved once
they got there are not really the world's best survivors, and the invasions
over the past few centuries have wreaked havoc on the older species. For
instance, wild pigs root up the soil, destroying plants, and the rats which
probably came with the Polynesians are nocturnal, while the mongooses which
were imported to keep the rat population down are diurnal, but hungry. The
mongooses like to eat the eggs and young of the older bird species.
While we did see pet parrots there, I assume that there is a real concern
about escapees breeding and proliferating.
