Around 20 years ago, the Western countries decided to stop corruption and
under the table payments in Africa, it worked so well that it let China into
most of Africa instead so it actually created a bigger problem.

I agree about change in our lifetime, the United Nations (silly words) can't
do anything, change will only come when the major powers get together and
punish other major powers like China and Russia if they don't do their part by
reducing trade with them. At the present the west is too dependant on trade
with China so it is difficult to do.
This will take real leadership and political will from the west as a group
instead of thinking about their own self interest.
