My Sony, after you mentioned the faded blacks, doens't do that. Black is
black.

Some HD stations have taken to, when using the SDTV signal leaving the
black bars on the side of the screen, using them as colored frames for
their pictures. I expect them to begin advertising in them soon.

Actually there's a purpose for all of this. The frequencies used by the
VHF television broadcasts are going to be used for more Police and other
Emergency/Commercial radio services. The 14-69 UHF channels will be
occupied by the newer HD channels. Within the bandwidth of one NTSC
broadcast channel, they can put 5 HDTV channels. Locally, VHF channels
2, 4, 5, 9 and 12 will be moving to UHF frequencies.
