I knew that natural gas was methane, but didn't know about manufactured gas.
Many years ago, lots of small towns had "town gas" which was made from coal
in local plants and piped around to the houses. I believe that it was used
only for lighting, not heat, as they'd simply burn the coal in the house
itself for that purpose.
