i don't know how "similar" your "similar" would be but
grits are coarse ground hominy... hominy is made from soaking corn in a
special lye bath... if you know what Cream of Wheat is, grits is very
similar except more coarse and generally served with butter or red-eye
gravy... no sugar in or added to grits... cheese? yup, in some cases...
kinda like cheese biscuits ;)

in fact, if grits are cooked too long, they are very much like polenta ;)
