Just so that you are aware, TASM*.ZIP is called the Table Based Assembler.
Not the Borland product, this one is shareware. ftp.simtel.net.

The best source of info might be the Nasm source code, in C, which I
have never really looked at due to lack of interest. When I use an
assembler though, that is the one and the source is available from
sunsite (last seen in .../linux/incoming).
