Some of the 100 Mbps networking schemes use the 3rd and 4th pairs this way.

I have absolutely no idea.  It never even occurred to me to buy cables from 
3Com, and I'm sure they would be outrageously expensive.

I think it is past the point of absurdity to insist on 3Com branded cables.
