   You mention to Anne Ehrenshaft that "two subsequent spaces _never_
should occur."
   If you mean two contiguous spaces, as I suspect you do, then how
about this?  You select your fonts and set your word and letter spacing
for relatively high compression. Then, to get a little more space
between sentences, you hit the space bar twice, with kerning enabled and
the kerning table set to kern the two spaces to roughly 1.5 spaces.
   I've been set up this way for three years.  But of course I'm using
selected proportional fonts with full justification, and my printed
documents are pretty specialized.
