Howdy Bill!
This is a question I am wrestling with also: DA-88 or ADAT. I'll pass
on what I know.
I've used the DA-88 quite a bit and liked it a lot. Its got some
great features. It synchronizes much better than an ADAT from what I
have learned. There are two main problems with the da88. It is
reasonably more expensive ($1000 more) and its design leaves
something to be desired. DA88s have a heat problem and IMHO need more
"babying" than an ADAT. Plus there is a design flaw where if you
record on track 2 right after track one, everything on track one is
re-recorded. This is all in the digital domain so I'm not completely
aware of all the problems that could arise from this because it does
the same for all pairs of tracks (3&4,5 & 6, 7 & 8)
For less money the ADAT does not offer all the synchronization
features built in. And although early models had severe transport
problems The new system 4's are supposed to be great.
Feel free to ask any more, thats just my quick thoughts. I am
kinda leaning toward an adat right now.
