SL> Ooooh! Disney reference books! How fun....unmapped territory for me.
SL> Would you mind terribly listing a few titles and ISBN #?
Okey dokey, here is number 5 (I think) in a continuing series on where I
get all this neat stuff:
This review is not about a reference book, instead it's about a really
neat reference *magazine* I recently discovered:
. _Cinefantastique_
. Published monthly by Frederick S. Clarke
. P.O. Box 270, Oak Park, IL 60303, 708-366-5566
. ISSN 0145-6032, $5.95/issue
This magazine takes as its subject matter "genre" films and television.
This includes animation, science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Lately,
animation has been featured as the past two issues have featured "James
and the Giant Peach" and "Hunchback of Notre Dame".
The May 1996 issue on "James" included over twenty pages of coverage
(over 30% of total page space). In addition to a substantial main
article, there are 1-2 page sidebars on such subtopics as author Roald
Dahl, Tim Burton, visual effects, screenplay development, character
design, production design, and armature fabrication. If that isn't more
than you wanted to know about the film, you just want to know too much!
One area where _Cinefantastique_ really shines is placing new
productions in perspective of what has gone before. The coverage of
"Hunchback" included an article listing all of the previous cinematic
assaults on Victor Hugo's work (with stills from all but one). While
most of us here believe that Disney films are in a class by themselves,
they are not the only ones out there (sorry if that comes as a shock).
One important note: not all issues (by far) address Disney films. Those
with narrow taste may want to review each issue at the bookstore before
committing a subscription.
If you want to read interviews with the animators, artists, directors,
and writers of your favorite animated films; if you want contemporary
commentary; if you want updates to Grant's "Encyclopedia" and Thomas'
"Art of Animation" (and if you're willing to get them from "outside"
sources); _Cinefantastique_ may be a magazine worth your time to locate.
