IIRC (it's been a loooooooooooong time) one saved the work by setting the
datasette to "record" by pressing the proper buttons - which varied depending
on which tape deck you were using. Then typed in the save command and waited
whilst the machines did their thing.
To load a program one typed in the load command (sorry I don't recall the exact
syntax) and got things rolling. Then went to the kitchen to make a sandwich and
get a cuppa. About the time those were finished the program would be loaded.
