I'm Quoting Lee Jacksons post to Jonathan Fingas:
JF> Well, think about it for a moment. Who do you know that is
JF> reknowned for their game music? The only other people I can think of
JF> are George Oldziey (the Wing Commander III composer) and George "The
JF> Fat Man" Sanger.
LJ> Bobby Prince. Purple Motion. And, in some small way, Trent Reznor.
This is the second time I've seen Purple Motion mentioned in this echo.
I only know his(assumption of gender)work from a demo for ASMmbley'92.
Well the man kicks ___ up, down and sideways, IMPO. Lee, if you know
what else he's done or perhaps if you know his email address, I'd like to
end
a little fan mail.

To Stay on topic,
Joe!
The console in quake and the flexibility of it's "rules" were why I said
wow"
when I first played. I would ask you to push the users ability to add,
reate
and compose with Prey and DNF. Duke was a step, you gave us the art and map
editor but you left us hanging if we wanted to add art or music and
istribute
them. I never did figure out a good way to export my creations for others,
f
they have modified art or music. PK's popular software and a gaggle of batch
files was about as good as it got. I would sure like to see that changed.
Back in the days of doom. If you had the wad file, you had all you needed;
music, art, sounds, sprites. I'll give, that the maps were nice and small
ut
with the exception of beginners, pushing what had already been done, was a
pain in the ___!
That brings up another point. The ease with which any ole fool can crank out
maps that suck was bothersome. Weeding through meg after meg of duke map, in
search of the rare gem was no fun. Now you'll have to be a sufficiently
motivated level author to tackle quake BSP's. At least that's what I'm
hearing. The sheer complexity gives all those half___ "ideas" a foreboding
gloom. There are maps a'plenty that contain nary a lotag. They may be
brilliant designs, motif selections, and some will find ways to create
ffects
that no one has seen yet. But, I firmly believe that if you make a door in
a map, it had better work, especially if you tout it as the end-all of duke
maps. ( Oh boy do they. =] )
What can be done? I dunno. But I'd have to say that the level of junk is in
direct correlation with difficulty involved in making an add-on of any sort.
From your position, I'm sure you're saying, "Why would we make something
hard to use?" Well it's not a totally worthless idea, so long as complexity
is done in the name of flexibility.
Thanks for your time.
