Three stewards hand in licences Copyright c 1998 Nando Media Copyright c 1998 Agence France-Presse PARIS (Jul 29, 1998 - 12:10 EDT) - Three stewards who were adjudged to have made errors during the British Formula One Grand Prix earlier this month Wednesday handed in their super steward licences to the International Automobilie Federation (FIA). Nazir Hoosien of India, Roger Peart of Canada and Howard Lapsley of Britain handed in their licences after the World Motor Sports Council ruled they had been guilty of errors during the race, in relation to Michael Schumacher's Ferrari passing another car under a yellow caution flag. Schumacher went on to win the race in controversial circumstances, ending the race in pit lane while completing a 10-second penalty. The FIA issued a press release Wednesday afternoon saying the stewards had made three mistakes: They treated information from the race director as a formal report of an incident. They failed to note the time at which, and the lap on which the alleged incident took place. As a result the wrong lap was applied and was applied outside the permitted time. They failed to communicate their decision to the race director with the result that the information did not appear on the TV monitors as requested by the rules. The McLaren-Mercedes team earlier this week failed in an appeal against Schumacher's victory. Schumacher was leading second-placed Mika Hakkinen's MacLaren in the closing laps, and he took the penalty by going into the pit lane on his victory lap, leaving Hakkinen to take the chequered flag The FIA on Tuesday ruled, however, that the result should stand. --- Msged/386 4.20 beta 4* Origin: Blizzard of Ozz, Melbourne, Australia (3:635/728.4{at}fidonet) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 633/267 |
