Hi Harry,
Chassis cleaning isn't as simple as you might suspect, definitely not
as simple as you'd like. The copper is a very thin plated layer, covered
with a thin clear coating (lacquer maybe), the spotting often extends thru
both, and the pitting definitely goes thru to the steel chassis and is
pretty much irreversible. That said, go to
http://www.wb4hfn.com/DrakeTechTips.htm and you'll find one method of
helping it under "Restoration Techniques." The corrosion pits can be
scraped clean with a sharp pointed blade, then re-coated with clear
fingernail polish.
For the variable capacitors, all you really need to do is put some
DeOxit on the sliding contacts at the shaft ends. Any dirt/crud doesn't
bother anything except cosmetics. You can clean it however/if you wish,
but treat the contacts afterwards.
