Hi Roland,
RS: I was up in Quebec City earlier this year and was shocked to hear
RS: from the salesman that the cellular frequencies are blocked on the
RS: scanners they sell up in Canada too! If that is the case, I would
RS: just go to one of the other dealers that sell non-Radio Shack
RS: scanners and get a non-crippled radio. Why get a radio that is
RS: crippled?
That's a good point indeed. When i purchased my last scanner, a
PRO-2004 some (many) years ago, the cellular frequencies were already
blocked. Inside the box, a short note explained why. At least, i was
able to restore them, but then shortly after that, in the PRO-2006
"era" the impossible modifications came in effect...about the same
time as the ECPA was in effect in the U.S. of A.
In Canada, we had some and few mini-scandal regarding people
taping cellular conversations (especially some ministers and others
public figures) thus making big publicity out of it. The Government
didn't liked at all. Then they re-inforced the old radio law, but
nothing similar to the ECPA was done...yet.
Many peoples don't realize (and not necessarly just in Canada!)
that almost everything with an antenna attached to it can be received
by a third party.
In an another area, the new PCS (Personnal Communication System)
telephones will be available soon in Canada. Using some frequencies in
the 1900 Mhz band (yep! 1.9 Ghz) and digital techniques. The system
will be similar to the cellular technology, but the cell coverage will
be less than conventional cellular.
Back to scanners. Now, since many other companies offer good
scanning receiver, i also plan to choose my next one from another
source. I was (and am) very pleased with my RS '2004 , but when i buy
a radio i want it to cover all the frequencies i need (or can be
needed), and not sparsed with holes here and there...
By the way, i went trhough many RS store in my area, and none of
them received the new 97 catalog yet.
